Trucking

Driving Into the Storm

A storm system rolled through Northern Indiana and Ohio and I got to roll with it. Winds were whipping the trucking around pretty good, but it makes the ride interesting. I unloaded zinc ingots and picked up sheet steel. Easy stuff.

There was no time or good place to stop as the sun went down, so I did what I could .

Another Day Trucking in Pittsburgh

I could complain about trucking in Pittsburgh for hours. What a mess for a truck. I would love to go visit in a car, but trucking through it is a nightmare.  Today I had the pleasure of a construction site. That compounds problems. As you can see from the photo of the Bakery Square development, one wrong move and you’re in a very big hole. I had it all planned out for leaving. I was going to spin around in a bus garage parking lot. There was a sign forbidding that, but you know, it’s just a suggestion. Then a pittsburgh cop parked in the lot and he was looking right at me! I had to navigate through the holes and hope for the best. See, I’m not paranoid, they are watching me!

Then I got out of there and noticed this odd situation. Every truck in this lineup is an el-cheapo Freightliner. Mexico (that’s where they make them) should be proud!

Interstate 70 Near Buckeye Lake, OhioFlooded Again

Once again heavy rains have closed down one lane on 70 eastbound and the 79 southbound on-ramp to 70 west.

This happens every time we get heavy rains, so nothing new here, but I thought I would send some pictures.

Interstate 70 has an interesting history of problems. The old timers will tell you how the DOT was warned about most of them before it was built. The mines underneath the highway are the most dangerous and there have been collapses in the past. The flooding near Buckeye Lake would have been an obvious problem, it’s in a low lying area next to a lake. If the highway were routed just a little north, these problems would have been avoided and the Interstate would have served the towns of Heath, Ohio and Newark, Ohio better.

Other highways like “The Snow Chi Minh Trail”, which is Interstate 80 across Wyoming have problems that were ignored to satisfy political need also. The Indians in the area could not believe they would put a highway right through an area well known for bad snow storms dating back to ancient times. They bypassed towns that would have benefited from the highway in this case too.

You would think that there would be public outcry when they continue to make the same mistakes over and over, but we put up with it.  I guess it’s just easier to let it go and let them do as they will.

Here are some photos of the flooding.
