Kindle for PC

I don’t know how I missed this, but Amazon now has Kindle for PC software. The software is free, the books are definitely NOT!  They came out with it in November 2009. From what I’m reading, you’re able to purchase Kindle books and read them on a Kindle, Iphone, or PC. If you have Windows 7, there are some added benefits like using hand gestures to zoom in and out.

I was never a fan of the Kindle. I didn’t want to pay a huge amount for a reader, then pay again to read books. I thought that if they wanted to produce a proprietary format that was only good for their books, the reader should be cheap or free. I had plenty to read in e-book format on the PC.

Kindle does have the highest quality content available. At the prices, it should be! Some books are worth the price though. With this software, I’ll end up purchasing a few and see how it goes soon.

Ubuntu. Get Yours and Stop the Pain

Ubuntu is a free Linux operating system. It is the most user-friendly distribution of Linux that I have found. It is easy to install, update and manage software on. The advantages of a Linux system for those who just want to do computer basics without fear of a virus cannot be paralled by any other operating system. I highly recommend having one computer at your house that runs on this system.

Photoshop for the Photographer and Digital Artist

Photoshop is the premier photo editing software. It can enhance any photographer’s work. If you cannot afford the high price, Gimp is a fine alternative.

Iolo System Mechanic – Affordable Total Computer System Care

I found Iolo anti-virus a few years ago when I ran into problems with Norton Anti-Virus and McAffee. These two leaders in the anti-virus and computer maintenance software fields were actually causing system problems on Windows XP. It really made me mad that “fix-it” software was actually causing computer failures! I began to look for an alternative and found Iolo System Mechanic.

While some of the claims that Iolo makes are a bit far fetched, it does make a great firewall, anti-virus, and software maintenance system. There are many functions, like a registry backup, that are done automatically with Iolo. It has a very simple and straight-forward control panel to ensure that  a computer stays in good running order.

The price is less than half of it’s competitors and there is a free trial period. Just make sure that you’ve uninstalled any previous firewall or anti-virus software. This includes disabling the Microsoft firewall and anti-virus options. Click on the add below to try it out.

FileZilla – The FTP King

I worked at a place that decided the best FTP security was to only buy one copy of paid FTP software and make everyone request a transfer through this person. This employee barely understood FTP and had no backups of all of the FTP settings for the thousands of connections that we needed to do. In my search to take care of my own FTP needs I found FileZilla.

FTP software this good should not be free. It just makes you feel guilty. It makes you feel bad for people that still pay for FTP software.

Screenshot Captor

I use Screenshot Captor for any of my screen shots. It’s donation ware and it’s simple to use. It can create really high quality screen shots.
