The PT-378.
I was really excited to find this photo of my Uncle’s boat, the PT-378. His name is Dwight Spearman. I found the photo on the World Naval Ships website. My thanks go out to the folks running this website.
The conversation about the boat started when Uncle Dwight mentioned that he had been to a store that sold old military gear, mainly for reenactments, and he seen a photo of his boat with the number 378 prominently displayed. I had a hunch if there was a photo of the boat, it would be on the Internet somewhere. When the subject of World War 2 comes up, I always try to pry as much information out of him as I can, so this was another chance to find out more.
He said that after basic training at Great Lakes he and some others had volunteered for PT boat training. Instead, they were sent to Gunnery school where they expected to be sent to larger ships. After training, they found themselves on PT boats. These boats were small wooden vessels that performed many patrol and light duties. They were extremely fast and heavily armed considering their size, but lacked armor protection. When they were detected, the only thing they could rely on was speed and hope to get out of the range of enemy guns.
The PT-378 would go out on patrol for a usual period of 2 weeks. They would commonly travel in groups of 4. As 4 were leaving, they would commonly see 4 coming back in from patrol. The duties would change as the battle required. Often, they would pick up stranded aviators who were shot down. They were always looking for Japanese naval vessels to make reports of their movements. They would spend their nights circling islands that were known to be inhabited by the Japanese. During the day, the Air Force would watch them, but at night, PT boats would circle with radar looking to stop any movement. There were even more interesting missions too.
Uncle Dwight tells that his most frightening experience was dropping U.S. Army Rangers onto the shores of an island in the Philippines. They got to full speed, then slowly quieted the engines to a dead quiet coast and dropped the Rangers off on the shore. Then, they had to leave very slowly to avoid detection of the sound of the engines. He said he was scared to death to do their part and couldn’t imagine being dropped off on the shore! Some time later, the PT-378 received orders to go back and pick the Rangers up! When they retrieved the Rangers, the Rangers had people with them. They had broken INTO a prison holding political prisoners. They were lower level leaders in the villages in the area that the Japanese had imprisoned and others. These people held valuable information that we needed before invading and removing the Japanese later. Once out in open waters, one of the escapees asked Uncle Dwight where he was from. He said, “Ohio”. He then asked, “How are the Buckeyes doing this year?”. Uncle Dwight and others were shocked to hear that question right after such a dangerous mission. It turned out that this man was a Spaniard. He was a travel writer and happened to be on the island when the Japanese invaded and they had imprisoned him. Uncle Dwight didn’t get a name, but I’m sure somewhere out there, the writer has a more detailed story about his encounter with the PT boat.
Records show that the PT 378 was sold after the war, but Uncle Dwight says that he thought nearly all of them were destroyed near Leyte in the Philippines. There is only one remaining operational PT boat, the PT 658. Of the original 12 PT vets that put her back in operation, only 6 survive today. Here’s a video about this boat.
The numbers of the boats tell their age. For example, the most famous PT boat, President Kennedy’s PT-109, was commissioned early into the war. There were about 1,000 total PT boats, so the PT-378 was put into action a little later than the 109.
I hope this post reaches anyone that may be looking for a photo of the PT 378! If you have some stories about her, make sure you let me know.

My Own Personal Boycott
After seeing this link about the destruction of the Internet for the sake of the entertainment industry, I say to hell with the entertainment industry.
To be fair, it’s an easy thing for me to do. In my opinion and according to my tastes, they’ve churned out nothing but shit for a long time now. For others, consider that the same industry you’re giving money to today may be trying to put you in jail for a minor infraction. The law is so vague, you may not even be aware it’s an infraction.
This industry is willing to cripple the progress of nearly every other industry simply because the cannot figure out how to encrypt their goods. They want to enjoy the Internet’s wealth, but skip doing the work that it takes to make it a viable solution for them. To top it off, they turn to our greedy little people that we put in Washington to do their dirty work for them.
Think about it before you shell out your hard earned money to them.
Cafe Orzo – Caffeine Free Coffee Replacement
I found Cafe Orzo at a discount place called Ollie’s. It’s a caffiene free coffee replacement that’s 100% natural. It’s made from special Barley. Barley’s in beer, so you know it can’t be that bad for you. I was really surprised at how much it tastes like coffee, really good coffee too!
I probably drink to much coffee, so this will work as an easy way to have something similar to drink. I’ve heard that caffeine free coffee can be just as bad for you as regular coffee, so this fixes that. There’s no processes done to it to alter it. It’s just barley.

Problem, Reaction, Solution. Get Streetwise to Manipulation.
I heard this theory a long time ago and I’ve noticed it happen a few times in the news. Here’s what “they” do. By “they”, I mean our government and our elite and powerful that control them. Conspiracy? Maybe, but it’s a pattern to watch for. When you see it, it’s time to ask questions.
For this example, I’ll use the Penn State Scandal.
- Create the problem. Penn State knew that there was child abuse occuring for years. They facilitated it and by doing so created the problem. Those in charge were well aware of previous incidents and they did nothing to ensure that children were never placed in situations alone with adults.
- Reaction – After so many years of facilitating a problem like this, now it’s a problem? The media gets their take on it and we get the version of the story that the state wants us to hear. There’s even SNL skit making fun of child abuse at Penn State!!
- Solution – With all of the expected outrage, changes to law MUST be made. There must be more done to report the incidents and that means more surveillance and more reporting. They want more “see something, say something” done.
I think that any normal person’s first reaction to seeing a 10 year old being raped in a shower would be to pulverize the attacker. If they couldn’t do it, they would immediately search for a method that could. Damned be the consequences, there’a a child being raped and you stop it. That didn’t happen here. What type of person would just report it? A person who’s been manipulated. A person who thinks that they must follow the rules of “how things are done around here”.
We’ll find out what all of this is really about soon enough. The truth will be in the details of the laws that are already being proposed. One thing is certain, making it a law that if you see a rape, you have to do everything in your power to stop it immediately is not going to be in the proposals. A real solution is not the end goal.
So get street wise. Find out who’s creating the problems and you’ll find out who “they” are. Question everything down to it’s source and you’ll avoid being a manipulated sucker. Always ask, “Who facilitated the alleged problem?”, “How is the media reacting to it? Making jokes of it? Making excuses for it?”, and “Will the proposed solution actually stop the problem or just contribute to another agenda that those who facilitated will enjoy?”.

The Red Green Hat.
Apparently I’m one of the few who watch The Red Green Show AND want a hat like Red Green’s. I’ve never been much of a person to watch a show and want to emulate what I see, but Red Green’s a little different. Red seems to know quite a bit about life for a north of 40 white male, so it seems fitting that he would know what type of hat works best, especially when it’s cold like his native Canadian home. The suspenders, no way. The flannel shirt, I already have plenty of them. The khaki pants, no way. I have no interest in anything else about Red Green, but the hat, yes! That hat is classic.
When I set out to find a hat like Red’s years ago, I didn’t even know what it was called. When I asked places that sell hat’s, they never knew who Red Green was. To make matters worse, they thought you were a fool asking for a red and/or green hat. Simply asking wasn’t going to work. I kept checking the Internet and even found a short clip where Red explained the hat. He stated that it was a Canadian Army expeditionary hat. When I searched, no such hat was found linked to the Canadian Army.
Once I finally discovered that the hat is called a Jones hat or simply a “duck hunter’s hat”, I started getting close. I also got Red’s humor. Who would be a prominent member of the Canadian Expeditionary Force? Duck hunters.
There are few suppliers that make these hats. Gore-Tex makes one, but it’s not available in green. It’s sold through L.L. Bean. When I called L.L. Bean to ask if I could get it in green, I made the mistake of telling the lady about the Red Green Show. After that, she too was stuck on the idea that I was looking for a red and/or green hat. Dammit. The rest of the hats I found where either plaid or camo. I found the McAlister Waxed Canvas Jones Hat, but it just didn’t seem close enough. I confirmed with a friend who knows hats that it was when he suggested it.
Once the hat arrived, I was impressed with it! It’s waxed so it keeps the rain out. There is a warm liner and ear flaps that fold in. I got mine in olive and the McAlister stitched logo really doesn’t show enough to bother me. I’m happy with it and I would recommend it to anyone searching for a hat like Red Green’s or just a good hat to keep the weather off.
Numerous Life Lessons Here. Watch and Learn.
Here’s a great short video about a successful knife maker. He went from a failed writer to being another type of artists.
There’s many life lessons here -
- Failure is just part of success.
- Surround yourself with others who are like-minded in goals.
- Don’t give up.
- Work! Work through the sweat, blood, and failures until you get it right.
You can probably find a few more. Thanks to Cultural Offering for the post.
